Studio Intern Digital Library Project

STUDIO INTERNSHIP
John William Bailly is an artist and professor in the FIU Honors College. This Studio Internship will see the student assist Professor Bailly in the making of artwork at his Miami Jungle Studio. The Internship may also involve administrative work in the preparation of exhibitions or lectures.

The Studio Intern (SI) will be registered for the free, zero credit IDH 3999. IDH 3999 does not count against earned credit but will be on the student’s official transcript.

DIGITAL LIBRARY PROJECT
Bailly has an offline library of artworks and photographs. This library serves as the foundation source for his artist talks, public lectures, and website. The Studio Intern’s project is to contribute to the development of this library. The SI will download and correctly label digital files from reliable sources.

The digital files must be high-resolution and free to use. For more moral and legal reasons, it is absolutely imperative that Bailly’s Library and Presentations do not infringe on anyone’s copyright.

Please review Bailly’s Lecture Image Rights and Usage.

RELIABLE SOURCES FOR FREE DIGITAL FILES
The following websites provide high-resolution, free to use digital images. Pexels, Pixabay, and Unsplash are the best for photos of cities and landscapes. Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia are reliable for artworks in the Public Domain.

British Library
Creative Commons
Europeana
Library of Congress
Paris Musées

DIGITAL FILE LABELS
Once downloaded, digital files need to be relabeled and organized in Bailly’s Library. The SI must change the file name and the caption.

File names for photos of places must have the three letter country abbreviation, three letter city abbreviation, and descriptive name. File names should be in the local name. For example, “Espana” would be used instead of “Spain.”

The file name abbreviation for a photo of the Palau de Musica in Barcelona would be

ESP.BAR.PalauMusica

Captions should provide a brief description and the credit line. The credit line is what lists the copyright status of an image. Here is the caption for a photo a student in the Palau de Musica in Barcelona.

Digital Files downloaded from websites must be properly sourced in the caption. This would be labeled in the following manner.

File Name: ESP.COR.Mezquita
Caption: Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba (Photo by Gabriel Trujillo on Unsplash)

Artworks that are older than 1900, are in the Public Domain and free to use. Art from 1900 and on is more complicated and requires the SI to check the work’s status. Artwork, unless explicitly stated, is covered by copyright up to 70 years after the creator’s death. Picasso died in 1971, so his artwork is not free to use until 2041 (1971+70=2041). Delacroix died in 1863, so his artwork is in the Public Domain.

Artworks will be labeled in the following manner:
File Name: ArtistLastName.Yearof Work.TitleofWork
Caption: Last Name. Title, Year. Institution. (Copyright Status)

Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People would be labeled as such:

File Name: Delacroix.1830.Liberty
Caption: Delacroix. Liberty Leading the People, 1830. Louvre. (Public Domain)

DIGITAL FILE ORGANIZATION
Once the SI has downloaded a digital file and correctly labeled it, the file must be placed in Bailly’s Library. Bailly’s Library is on OneDrive. Each SI will be given access to the Library.

The SI will first locate the proper country or topic folder.

Each Country Folder then contains city folders.

The City Folders contain the correctly labeled photographs.

WHO DOES WHAT?
Studio Interns will select a topic in the WhatsApp chat so that others know not to work on it.
