Deering Estate Studio Assistant Internship with Bailly

***Bailly was the Artist-in-Residence at the Deering Estate from 2018 to 2022. This internship is no longer available.***

Professor Bailly works with Interns. The position is unpaid, however it does offer benefits.

STUDIO ASSISTANT INTERNSHIP WITH BAILLY
John William Bailly is a Professor in the FIU Honors College and the Artist-in-Residence Fellow at the Deering Estate. This internship will see the intern assist Professor Bailly in the making of artwork at his studio at the Deering Estate.

The student intern will be registered for the free, zero credit IDH 3999. IDH 3999 does not count against earned credit but will be on the student’s official transcript.

This is an unpaid opportunity but includes an annual pass to the Deering Estate.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDIO ASSISTANT INTERNSHIP
SAI must be a current FIU undergraduate student.
SAI must have previously completed a class with Bailly.
SAI must commit to 100 hours for the semester.

BENEFITS FOR STUDIO ASSISTANT INTERNSHIP
SAI will earn experience in the making and exhibiting of artwork.
SAI will earn recognition as the studio assistant of Professor Bailly at the Deering Estate.
SAI will receive an annual pass to the Deering Estate.
SAI will have the opportunity to join artistic excursions with Professor Bailly.
SAI will have the opportunity to foster relationship with individuals in museums, parks, and education.
SAI will be guaranteed a personalized and substantive letter of recommendation and add a great line on their resume, upon a successful completion of the internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR STUDIO ASSISTANT INTERNSHIP
SAI must be comfortable in working with artistic materials.
SAI must be comfortable hiking and kayaking on drawing excursions.
SAI will transfer drawings and paintings into a digital format.
SAI will transfer drawings onto paintings.
SAI will mix and clean oil paints and brushes.
SAI must commit to 100 hours total for the semester. These will be completed both in-person and remotely.

Honors College student mentors are responsible for:
Attending all class sessions
Leading ice breakers and group activities
Co-facilitating discussions and class activities with Honors College faculty fellow
Interacting with students outside of class including, but not limited to group chats

The Honors College student mentor program helps students:
Develop leadership, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
Receive credit for an Honors internship course
Receive credit towards 2023-2024 Engagement Pathway or Service Hour
